When we stand , there are 3 points pressure under the foot
-
Calcaneus (heel)
-
1st metatarsal head
-
5th metatarsal head
-
These 3 are the main areas that support our body standing and form the 3rd arch of our foot .
-
During walking , foot pressure is concentrated on the 2nd , 3rd Met- heads and the calcaneus.

Medial Longitudinal Arch - from calaneus to 1st Met-head
-
Lateral Longitudinal Arch - from calcaneus to 5th Met-head
-
Transverse Arch -Formed by 5 Met-head
- Medial Arch Center : At navicular , close to talus.
Arch shapes formed by -
- Plantar ligaments
- Plantar fascia
- Muscles
- Bones
The Arch shape will be affected by any problems relating to these 4 components .
Non – weight bearing arch height > weight bearing arch height .
Function of foot arches
- A foot Arch is similar to a spring : Responsible for shock absorption and body propulsion during walking.
- Fatigue : loss of arch flexibility , means extra energy consumption for body propulsion.
