When we stand , there are 3 points pressure under the foot

  1. Calcaneus (heel)
  2. 1st metatarsal head
  3. 5th metatarsal head
  • These 3 are the main areas that support our body standing and form the 3rd arch of our foot .
  • During walking , foot pressure is concentrated on the 2nd , 3rd Met- heads and the calcaneus.
  • Medial Longitudinal Arch - from calaneus to 1st Met-head
  • Lateral Longitudinal Arch - from calcaneus to 5th Met-head
  • Transverse Arch -Formed by 5 Met-head
  • Medial Arch Center : At navicular , close to talus.  

Arch shapes formed by -

  1. Plantar ligaments
  2. Plantar fascia
  3. Muscles
  4. Bones

The Arch shape will be affected by any problems relating to these 4 components .

Non – weight bearing arch height > weight bearing arch height .

Function of foot arches

  • A foot Arch is similar to a spring : Responsible for shock absorption and body propulsion during walking.
  • Fatigue : loss of arch flexibility , means extra energy consumption for body propulsion.
